OCEAN CITY — A city school bus driver is being hailed a hero after her actions led to no students being injured when the bus caught fire on the Garden State Parkway Tuesday afternoon.
“We would like to recognize the Sheppard Bus driver for her actions and concern for our students,” School Business Administrator Timothy E. Kelley said in a statement Friday. “She was a true hero and showed the utmost care for our students, making sure they were all out of harm’s way after exiting the bus.”
The bus was carrying 10 students and heading to Sea Isle City from the Ocean City Intermediate School when it burst into flames near milepost 20.6 at 2:34 p.m., Chief Perry Coker of the Seaville Volunteer Fire Company said at the time.

Upper Township EMS and the Marmora Volunteer Fire Company also responded to the scene.
“We are also grateful to all the responders in Upper Township who answered the call for this emergency,” Kelley said. “Their dedication to our local communities is second to none.”
No one was injured and all students were safely brought back home, Kelley said.
Kelley credited the students for remaining calm throughout the ordeal.
“We want to thank everyone for their quick thinking and smart response during the incident,” Kelley said. “The students acted swiftly and calmly as they followed the driver’s directions to exit the bus as soon as a problem was identified. They should be commended, and we are thankful that everyone is safe.”
