Despite less-than-ideal weather conditions, the community came out for some fun and fitness at the Brigantine Farmers Market Saturday, Sept. 2.

Zumba instructor Marisela Dellinger and her crew energized the crowd. Some of the kids jumped into the Zumba action, as well as visitors. We received very positive feedback on the Zumba from vendors and visitors.

The “top tomato” sauce/gravy contest was a hit with delicious entries. The judges, Kathy Hipple, Chrissy Lauletta and Fran Paullin, selected the "very tasty sauce” entered by Lisa McClay as the first-place winner. McClay was awarded a $75 TD Bank giftcard, second-place finisher P.J. Magro won a $50 TD card, and third-place finisher Barb Leiby won a $25 TD giftcard.

The trivia contest had 60 entries, with 10 perfect responses. John Mastrangelo was selected the winner from our famous bucket, earning a $25 gift certificate to Laguna Rum Bar & Grill. Come to the farmers market Oct. 21; the contest theme will be scary movies trivia.

The children had much fun running the fitness circuit, with hurdles to jump over, a tunnel to crawl through, mini golf, bean bag toss, Hula hoops and Wiffle ball. They also kicked a soccer ball into a net and hopped across stepping stones. Their joy was evident as they worked through the circuit.

Brigantine Therapy and Physical Fitness was on board to share its fitness schedule; if you missed them stop in at the new facility to learn about a program for you.

Friends Helping Friends received a donation that covered all of its posters and art. It was an amazing donation from an entrepreneur who intends to use the posters to change the trajectory of high school students’ lives toward better career outcomes. Friends Helping Friends is grateful to this kind donor for his support. Proceeds assist families in Brigantine.

This was the last farmers market until our fall event 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 when we celebrate fall fun with apple and pumpkin pie making contests. Bring your pies to the demo tent at 9:30 a.m. to register.

There will be a pumpkins to purchase and free decorating for children 9:30 a.m. until noon at the children’s activity tent.

Adam Berardo's band Noise Museum will entertain at the gazebo. He is a singer-songwriter whose songs take a turn toward the abstract.

The Crossroads Youth from the Community Presbyterian Church will represent the Spotlight on Community. I recommend stopping by and speaking to these energetic and dedicated youth who provide service to the community.

The Spotlight on a Local Vendor will be Insurance Agencies Inc., "southern New Jersey’s coastal risk specialists since 1879." Learn about their personalized insurance products.

Cloudy skies, sprinkling, and even rain do not deter the Brigantine community from coming to the market to purchase breakfast, fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, desserts, snacks, condiments, ribs, and other food they desire to feed families and friends.

Our generous community donated $152 cash to Hurricane Harvey victims, a check for $50 to the Red Cross, and a truckload and two SUVs full of necessities such as diapers, paper towels, trash bags and wipes that will be shipped to Houston by the Hands Up organization.

Thank you to all for your outpouring of love for the victims of Harvey.
