It is with great regret that I must inform you of the passing of a longtime member, Sue Cvelich. Sue has been with the club for 30-plus years. She helped plant the original daffodils across the island and was in charge of the property awards committee for many years, personally delivering certificates across the island when the program first started.

Sue ran the hospitality program for many years and continued to help with setup and cleanup until last fall. Sue and her husband, Matt, have been bed tenders for a number of beds. She helped at almost every function, such as working with kids for Family Fun Day.

The club could always count on Sue for setting up and working registration for the flower and art show; she made beautiful floral arrangements and always had multiple entries — one of her favorites was drying hydrangeas and making wreaths. Before "The Gathering" was catered, the affair was held at the yacht club and members made the food. Sue always baked and cooked something and helped to set up the tables, arrange the food and clean up.

"She had a great interest in flowers and how to grow and maintain them, and she wasn't afraid to ask questions about gardening and was always eager to learn," said her longtime friend Peg Moore. "I never heard a complaining word out of her; she always thought on the positive side of things."

Sue Cvelich will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Rest in peace, our dearest friend.

Moving on to business, the plant exchange was a successful event. Thanks to Chairwomen Gina Bergin and Peg Moore and to everyone who helped to make this a successful endeavor, including Linda Mantello, Dolores Ciarrochi, Vic Agbayani and Julie Watkins. Thanks to all in attendance for your participation. Happy gardening with your new plants to everyone.

Be sure to visit our tent at the farmers market June 17. There will be lots of freebies, fun activities for kids, information, and items for sale. We are selling plants, including milkweed, tulip bulbs, and a handmade purse made from recycled plastic bags that is sure to steal your heart. We have garden flower stakes made from aluminum cans that will enhance any garden. Think butterflies! We have many butterfly items, including stickers for the kids. Stop by and say hello! Alert: I have just learned that Secret Garden Tour tickets will be available for sale also.

Be sure to attend the Secret Garden Tour July 8. This self-guided tour will be held 9 a.m.-noon rain or shine, and 10 properties are included in this year's tour. Tickets are $13 in advance and can be purchased beginning June 19 at Ace Hardware, Bella Luna, Island Items, Bella Rosa Florist, Joe's Farm Market and Galloway Nursery. Tickets are $15 the day of the tour. Meet at the senior lunch entrance to pick up the list of houses.

Bed tenders, by now you all should have received your stipends. It is extremely important that you save your receipts from whatever you purchase for your beds and give them to Treasurer Johanne Milnes or bed tender coordinators Fran Streeper or Phyllis Glomb. If you are not planning to use it, please write void on the check and return it. Thanks.
