Seventh- and eighth-graders in Mark Brestle's class at the Brigantine North School learned about Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7.


On the 76th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japan, Brigantine North School teacher Mark Brestle invited retired Coast Guardsman Jim Mackey into his classroom to share his 10 years of experience on the USS Arizona as a volunteer in Hawaii with the seventh and eighth graders. The students watched a history video called "World War II from Space." The class then handled a flag flown over the Arizona decades ago, and read Honolulu newspapers reprinted from Dec. 7, 1941. Finally, the students examined memorial coins minted for collectors of that "day that will live in infamy."
