New teleneurology service at Cape Regional Medical Center
CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Cape Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce their
partnership with Specialists-On-Call, a Joint Commission accredited
organization. Specialists- On-Call has responded to the need for rapid effective
treatment of patients and the growing shortage of specialty physicians available
to treat patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and is the
latest addition to the telemedicine product line at the Medical Center.
This new service provides emergency neurological consultation, with a special
emphasis on emergency stroke care, via a state-of-the-art telemedicine and
videoconferencing system. Through the two-way videoconferencing link, the
neurologist interviews the patient and any significant others who are present
and performs a focused neurological examination. The neurologist is
electronically linked to the medical imaging system at Cape Regional Medical
Center so all radiology studies can be viewed as soon as completed. The
neurologist then conveys their recommendations to the treating physician at Cape
Regional Medical Center.
The new service was fully operational on Jan. 14, 2008. Since its inception, 40
patients have benefited from this service.
“The most positive benefit from this partnership is our ability to diagnose,
stabilize, and treat patients with neurological issues without the need to
transport them to another facility,” stated Dr. Michael Dudnick, chairman of the
Department of Emergency Medicine.
Cape Regional Medical Center is an affiliate of the University of Pennsylvania
Health System and is accredited by the Joint Commission with their Gold Seal of
Approval. The 242-bed Medical Center is located in the heart of Cape May County.
