Cruising Alaska
Harry and Dottie Wolverton of Smithville carried The Current with
them on a land/sea Princess cruise to Alaska last summer. They’re

Celebrating their 50th with the family
Bob and Judy Sames of Egg Harbor Township shared a cruise to Alaska
with their family in celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary.
They and their daughter Trish and her husband Doug Ackerman of
Colorado, daughter Jill and husband Steve Herbold of San Diego; son
John and wife Kim Sames of Virginia and son Barry Sames of
Philadelphia enjoyed kayaking, dog sledding, hiking and the wondrous
scenery in Alaska. All nine of the Sames' grandchild and Judy's
sister, Georgea Oshman of Linwood, also enjoyed the celebration.
Give ’em a home where the buffalo roam
John and Janet Jensen of Galloway Township spent their 42nd wedding
anniversary at Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks in
Wyoming. They enjoyed sightseeing in Jackson Hole at Jackson Lake
Lodge, where the elk were too numerous to count – along with some
moose and grizzly bears. They thrilled to a swift Snake River raft
trip with the gorgeous snow-covered Tetons peering over them and
stopped at the Old Faithful Inn, where the buffalo roam freely and
the geyser Old Faithful blows every 90 minutes. Other picturesque
viewpoints were at Lake Yellowstone Hotel, the Ucross Ranch, Crazy
Horse Monument (a work in progress) and Mount Rushmore.
Road trip of a lifetime
Jim and Karel Olson of Estell Manor and Sandy and Don Dormanen,
formerly of Estell Manor, traveled in their RVs via the Icefields
Parkway in Canada and the full 1,422 miles of the Alaska Highway.
They traveled a total miles of 12,000 miles, including 2,000 in
Alaska, where they viewed everything from glaciers to grizzles. It
was truly the trip of a lifetime.
Stop-off in British Columbia
Stopping at Victoria, British Columbia, on the way home from a
cruise to Alaska on board the Star Princess are neighbors Ruth Baker
and Jackie Anderson of Absecon, who shared The Current with a
visiting bobby from Scotland Yard, who graciously took their
picture.

Jack and Claire took a 14-day Princess cruise to Alaska, visiting
eight different Alaskan ports as well as Victoria, British Columbia.
The Jones family moved this summer from Seaville to Kodiak Island,
Alaska. Pictured are Chrissy, Annie Mae, Sawyer and Calvin. They
drove approximately 5,300 miles over 30 days to their final
destination. Not in the picture are Karen (mom) and Daisy (dog).
“Both pictures are from our summer vacation to Vancouver and Alaska
during August and September. The first picture is of my husband,
Ricky Herrera, and I (Christie Raniszewski HerreraI), as we
approached Hubbard Glacier in Alaska. The second picture was taken
at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic countdown clock, which is located
outside of the Vancouver Art Gallery. I was born and raised in
Wildwood Crest, and my parents (formerly of the Crest, now in
Marlton) are still active readers to/subscribers of The Wildwood
Leader, and now that I know there’s an online edition, I’ll be
keeping up with hometown news more often!”
An icy reception
Patti Stewart of Absecon and Missy Moore of Galloway Township
visited the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.
The Cummings family recently traveled to Alaska on the S.S. Volendam
to celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary for Bill and Andrea.

Allen and Patty Carter, of Dennis Township, celebrated their 20th
anniversary with an Alaskan cruise tour this past June. Here they
are at Denali getting ready for their next adventure. The editor is
going to let Allen get a pass on this one, because she loves her
Tuckahoe firefighters, but hopes the next time Mr. Carter submits a
Travels photo, he loves her enough to take the right paper.

Conover of Mays Landing is the Alaska Range in Denali National Park,
during a June visit. Denali is home to Mount McKinley, the highest
mountain in North America at 20,320 feet.

Vicky Dilks of Linwood and her daughter-in-law
Betty Dilks of Northfield enjoyed a two-week vacation touring Alaska
by land and by sea. They began their trip on land visiting
Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Seward, where they
departed on the Radiance of the Sea for a cruise to Hubbard Glacier,
Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. They flew home from
Vancouver, British Columbia. Here, they stand with a local native
outside the Icy Point Cannery, where they also went on a
bear-watching tour. They also took the Bearing Sea Crab Fishermen’s
Tour.
Northern exposure
Aidan, Parker and Thor Himley of Egg Harbor Township are pictured
visiting Seward, Alaska, where their family had a great time
camping, hiking, fishing and visiting with friends in July.

In July and August, Mary Jane and Tom Hunter, right, of Absecon and

Pleasantville and Northfield, took a fabulous land and cruise ship

Cruisin’ through retirement
Dwight and Nancy Neglia of Mays Landing took an Alaskan cruise and

Swirsky of Margate and their lifelong friends Sandra and Robert
Monblati of Denver, Colo., are pictured under the Alaskan pipeline
in Fairbanks, Alaska, during a two-week-long land and sea cruise
from Fairbanks to Vancouver in September. They reported that during
the site-filled trip they experienced an almost unheard of two
perfect weeks of clear, rainless weather.
North to Alaska
Don and MaryLee Jensen of Galloway Township enjoyed a two-week
vacation touring Alaska by land and by sea. Their trip began on land
visiting Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Seward, where

Neil and Renee Wiessler
of Margate flew to Fairbanks, Alaska, the day after their Aug. 12
wedding for a 14-day land and sea cruise with Celebrity Cruise
Lines. Behind them is a section of the Alaskan Pipeline where they
stopped while traveling from Fairbanks to the coastal port of Seward
to join their ship.
Adventures in Alaska
Aaron, Colleen and Haley Johnson of Egg Harbor
Township display The Current while soaking up the spring-like
weather in Alaska in August. Among the many activities and
first-time escapades they enjoyed were eating halibut tacos, fishing
for king salmon, piloting a small aircraft, Segway riding, seeing
native animals, glacier cruising, quad riding, pipeline exploring,
and, of course, shopping with the locals.
Christine Katsiff, of Ocean Pharmacy,
along with her daughter, Meghan, took a break on top of a glacier to
catch up on the local news in the Gazette. They were taking a
helicopter tour of the glacier area near Anchorage. They were in
Alaska visiting Christine’s son, Billy, who is stationed there with
the U.S. Army.

Arctic Adventure
After a lengthy
jaunt, Debbie Cotter of Somers Point, Laurie de
Lumeau of Anchor Point, Alaska and Alison "Sunny"
Leonard of Somers Point are pictured here holding a
copy of the Current on a July visit to Homer,
Alaska, Halibut Fishing Capital of the World. The
three friends spent a week checking out the
magnificent scenery, the abundant wildlife, sampling
local wines, mead and cuisine, and shopping in local
villages.

Heiden of Margate took The Current to Alaska in May
on a cruise aboard the Norwegian Star. The ports
included Seattle, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan and
Victoria, Canada. The whales, bears and bald eagles
all send their regards to friends in Margate.

Dotty Souder of Egg
Harbor Township and Russ Turnure of Mullica Township went on a
month-long vacation in July. They drove almost 12,000 miles and
stopped at Wisconsin, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and Canada on
their way to Alaska. Souder is holding The Current in front of a
sign welcoming them to Alaska.
Waiting for Santa
Jeanne Harden of Galloway Township enjoys her
issue of The Current at Santa Land in North Pole, Alaska, where she
and her husband, David, stopped during an Alaskan cruise in July.
34 in
July? It must be Barrow
Daria and Don
Guenther, center and right, went to Alaska to visit
their son, James, left, who is stationed at
Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage. Once there
they traveled to the Arctic Ocean and the city of
Barrow, which is the northernmost point of the
United States. The picture was taken on July 2 when
the temperature was 34 degrees with a wind chill of
27. There they were able to dip their fingers in the
frozen Arctic Ocean and learn about the lives and
customs of the Inupiat. The "Welcome to Barrow, The
Top of the World" sign is written in Inupiat, the
Native American language. A whale jawbone is to the
left.

Norwegian Cruise Lines Alaskan cruise on the Norwegian Sun July
8-15. One of their ports of call was Juneau, where they visited
Mendenhall Glacier. They also stopped in Ketchikan, Skagway and
Prince Rupert, Canada, where they took in some scenery and had a
spectacularly good time.
