Missed his burgers
Marc van de Rijn of Egg Harbor Township is standing at the base of
the Tokyo Tower. He spent two months of his summer break in Tokyo,
Japan, where he studied the language and participated in many local
customs and ate native cuisine. After two months of dining on rice
and fish, the junior at Steven’s Institute of Technology and member
of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity treated himself to Five Guys Burgers
and Fries as soon as he got home.
Finding enlightenment
Kathy and Richard Coburn of Linwood visited Tokyo, Japan. Recently
on one of their many day trips they visited Kamakura, home to the
second largest Buddha statue in Japan, built in 1252.
Traveling for two weeks in Japan, the Ely family
and the Kernan children stopped in Kyoto at the Golden Pavilion, the
most visited shrine in Japan, and brought the Gazette along with
them. They endured record temperatures as this photo was taken at
110 degrees. Their adventures included a two-day ascent of Mt. Fuji
as well as trips to Tokyo and Kamakura. This trip is a long awaited
return for the Elys as Michaele lived in Japan for three years as an
English teacher working for their government in 1991. From left are

They are shown here at Kiyomizudera Temple in Kyoto. While in Japan,
they also toured Tokyo and Mount Fuji.
Globe-trotting gymnasts
Tom and Lori Waddell of Egg Harbor Township, front row center, and
their daughter, Mikayla, took a trip to Japan with friends Bill
(back row) and Naho Martin (not pictured). Mikayla, pictured holding
The Current, is a Level 6 gymnast at Perfect Balance Gymnastics,
which is owned by the Waddells. While in Japan, Mikayla and her
father Tom had the opportunity to visit and train at two local
gymnastic schools. Despite the language barrier, the two were able
to communicate with the help of Naho's sister, Eku (pictured at the
far right, bottom), who lives in Japan and teaches gymnastics.
Mikayla exchanged gifts with her new friends in Japan, made by her
and her teammates at Perfect Balance. The trip included two weeks of
travel throughout Japan, including stays in Tokyo, Hakone, Yokohama,
Bunsie and a special trip to Tokyo Disney.
