Obama’s the man, and he’s a fan
This photo of George Butrus Jr. of Linwood was taken just
moments after the presidential inauguration in Washington,
D.C., where he spent three days trying to take it all in. He
said highlights include putting his arm around Martin Luther
King III on his father’s holiday, singing “America the
Beautiful” for Hawaiian TV with his friends Paul and Ken
VanLangen, and meeting members of the Boys Choir of Kenya,
who were fascinated when it started to snow. “Words can't
describe the feeling everyone had of goodwill towards each
other and to our country,” he said. “This may have been one
of the most wonderful experiences of my life!” |

She was there
Christina Lee of Galloway Township participated in the
Presidential Youth Inaugural Conference in Washington, D.C.
Along with hearing Doris Kearns Goodwin, Lisa Ling, Gen.
Colin Powell, former Vice President Al Gore and Archbishop
Desmond Tutu speak at the University of Maryland, she
witnessed the inauguration of President Barack Obama.

A weekend in the capital
Anthony and Lynnette Glass of Absecon spent a long weekend
celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in the nation’s
capital, along with their children, grandchildren, Sarah,
Zachary and Elizabeth Glass of Galloway Township. The
Current went along for the ride. Everyone enjoyed a
firsthand look at the Capitol, the Washington Monument,
Lincoln Memorial and World War II memorial and learning
where the President lives. At the end of the weekend
celebration the anniversary couple was joined by son Stephen
and his wife, AmyBeth (not pictured), for dinner at Fogo de
Chao, a Brazilian steakhouse.

Regan and Erin Fredericks of Ocean City took a trip with
their parents Harry and Diane Fredericks to Washington, D.C
and Arlington, Va. over the Columbus Day weekend to visit
their Aunt Jen. They had a fabulous trip visiting George
Washington’s house at Mt. Vernon and the Smithsonian. |

Benjamin Neavear goes to Washington
In August, Benjamin Neavear of Absecon traveled to
Washington, D.C. with his parents and got to see the White
House.

Mickey Marchand, a longtime resident of Ocean City, enjoyed
a lunch cruise aboard the Spirit of Washington last month,
taking time out to pose with the Gazette. The photo was
taken by her daughter, Linda.

Courtney and Conor go to Washington
In April, Courtney and Conor Flaherty of Egg Harbor Township
and their family were invited for a private tour of the
Capitol in Washington, D.C. by U.S. Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo.
After enjoying lunch and a personal tour given by the
congressman, they enjoyed the view of the mall and the
Washington Monument from a private balcony. |

A monumental trip
Junior Girl Scout Troop 14092 of Northfield took The Current
to Washington, D.C., for the National Cherry Blossom
Festival. In the back row are Ciara Sacco, Sienna Spooner,
Amanda Tripet and Amber Bortner. In front are Tori Larsen
and Kelly Tarnovski.

Eum attended the Washington, D.C. ball at the beautiful
Terrace Ballroom.

Rosalia and Michael Daddi-DiDonato, of Wildwood Crest,
brought The Wildwood Leader with them to Washington D.C.
during their recent visit on President's Weekend. They were
invited to tour the White House. No cameras are allowed
inside, but The Leader was! Here is a picture of Michael,
Rosalia and The Leader standing in front of the White House
after their tour.

A capital idea
Gus and Donna Moran of Egg Harbor
Township took their daughters Lauren (Troop 5470) and
Jillian (Troop 3150) to Washington, D.C. in June. The family
participated in a sing-along on the Mall, celebrating the
95th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. |

Scouting out some U.S. history
Boy Scout Troop 55 of Somers Point
visited Washington, D.C. to tour its many national monuments
and memorials. This picture was taken at the Lincoln
Memorial. From left to right, top to bottom, Troop 55

Tracing their revolutionary roots
Three members of the General Lafayette
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, also
known as DAR, traveled to Washington, D.C., in June for
DAR’s 116th annual Continental Congress. From left are Mary
Ellen Chartier of Egg Harbor Township, Carol Heinisch of
Absecon (holding The Current) and Kathleen Woelbl, of Eastampton,
Burlington County, at DAR’s Constitution Hall -- the only
structure built in tribute to the Constitution of the United
States -- where they posed in front of the Founders Statue.
The statue is dedicated to the four women who founded DAR in
1890: Eugenia Washington, Mary Desha, Ellen Hardin Walworth
and Mary S. Lockwood. |

Girl Scout Troop 4674 from Upper Township participated in
the 95th anniversary Sing-a-Long held on the Mall in
Washington, D.C. on June 9. The sing-a-long commemorated 95
years of girl scouting. A nation-wide sing-a-long is held
every five years. Every state was represented and there were
more than 150,000 girl scouts in attendance. |

The Gazette traveled to Washington, D.C. for the
National Volunteer Leadership Initiative Conference for the Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation. Whitney Randles (left) and Patrick Randles
(right) were elected the VLI co-chairs for the Delaware Valley
chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Their children, Colin,
age 3, and Sean Patrick, 2, both of Seaville, were born with the
disease. Holding the Gazette is the president of the Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation, Robert J. Beall, Ph.D.

The Cape May
County Healthy Community Coalition recently visited Congressman
LoBiondo in his Washington office. The coalition is a non-profit
organization that collaborates with community organizations to
strengthen substance abuse prevention in the county. Pictured right

The Leader cheers Eagles at Redskins game
Tim Fitzpatrick, owner of the Crest Tavern hosted 46 Wildwoodians
for an overnight trip to our nation’s capital to enjoyed a football
game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Redskins. In
true South Jersey hospitality, we invited a platoon of Marines, who
were collecting items for their Toys for Tots campaign, to join us
at our post tailgate victory party. Holding The Leader was the
highest ranking officer who complimented our group on how impressed
he was that we were so proud to be able to spell the word
E-A-G-L-E-S as a group and would do so over and over and over...Semper
