MARGATE – Residents can expect good news for their wallets as the city school tax rate is expected to hold steady for the upcoming 2006-2007 school year.
The Margate School District budget has been submitted to the City Commission, and there will be no increase in the school tax this year, according to District Superintendent Dominick Potena.
“We are a Type I school district and we give our numbers to the city to include with their figures, and I have been told that due to our moderate increase in spending, any possible increase has been offset with an increase in ratables so that homeowners will not see any additional school costs.”
The Margate School District budget of $12,449,553 for 2006-2007 includes a local tax levy of $10,173,118. The tax rate of 33.3 cents per $100 of assessed property value will remain the same as this year, meaning a home assessed at $250,000 will pay $832.50 in Margate School District taxes.
The current-year spending plan of $12,280,868 with a tax levy of $10,065,488 had the same rate of 33.3 cents per $100.
The budget contains no new teachers or positions. The Margate School District operates the Union Avenue Elementary School, the William Ross Intermediate School and the Eugene A. Tighe Middle School.
According to Tom Hiltner, city administrator, Margate has $3.31 billion in ratables, up $33 million from the prior year. Hiltner said the increase is due in part to increases in real estate values along with renovations and additions.
The city of Margate has tentatively scheduled introduction of its budget for the April 6 Margate Commissioners’ meeting.
