Casel’s gives lesson in supermarket democracy

MARGATE – It was a dozen eggs, a pound of chicken salad and one absentee ballot, please over the weekend at Casel’s Supermarket.
Six Atlantic City High School students volunteered to man a table where people planning to vote in the upcoming election could check to see if they were registered or fill out a change of address or absentee ballot form.
“We have had a number of change of addresses for people who are registered to vote but have moved since the last election,” said Casel’s owner Howard Seiden, who came up with the idea of spreading a little democracy among the weekend specials.
“If nothing else, it has reminded people that there is an election just around the corner.”
Seiden, who heads the Margate Business Coalition, said he wanted to draw attention to the upcoming election, as it is one that will bring changes to City Hall. Two of the three commissioners have chosen not to run for re-election. John Swift is the only incumbent seeking another four-year term on the city governing body.
The market owner said he could have used some of his younger employees to work the booth, but chose instead to see if there were any local teens who wanted to get a sense of involvement in their local election.
Seiden said six teens came forward to volunteer their time: Rachael Shanker, Mallory Sykes, Todd Busler, Mike McCarron, Tim Libizzi and Adam Seiden all chose to be a part of local democracy in action.
