MARGATE – Why wait for Black Friday when you can get pre-holiday sales the Wednesday before while shopping locally and beating the crowds at the same time.

That’s the thinking behind Green Wednesday, a campaign for a group of business owners in Margate from Granville to Douglas avenues who will be discounting their wares Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The program got started as an effort by Lou Freedman, owner of Bocca Coal-Fired Bistro, to promote the north end of the business district, with its restaurants and shopping variety.

“We got to thinking and decided, let’s do a sale before Black Friday,” said Lauren Harris of Bocca’s. “We went around and spoke to the local business owners. They all thought it was a great idea. Businesses thought of their deals; Bocca put together a flyer. We wanted people to stay local and shop on a day when we weren’t competing with big businesses.”

Harris said the goal is to get people to recognize that there is a great deal of shopping to offer in Margate, especially on the north end of town.

“Shoppers should take advantage of Green Wednesday to keep the local businesses in town so they don’t have to compete with all the big-name stores,” Harris said. “Who wouldn’t like all the great deals they have in store for that day when you are able to slow down and forget the mall traffic and enjoy all the sweet deals?

Participating shops include Scout, Talk of the Towne, Shear Sensations, Body Architects, Bocca, Verizon, Colmar Home Center, Margate Card and Gift Studio, Jersey Devil Surf, Avant Girl, My Yoga, and NJ Yoga Zone.

Harris said they hope to make it a monthly event.
