MARGATE — The Eugene A. Tighe Middle School held its annual Formal Day a little early this year. The daylong event is usually held on the Friday closest to the Academy Awards, but this year the students celebrated on Valentine's Day.
Students got dressed up in formal wear for the day and attended a special luncheon with a Valentine's Day theme. They posed in groups for pictures, and teachers filled out ballots for those considered best-dressed nominees.
Later in the day, the entire school attended an assembly to announce the nominees for best dressed and to pick a winner for each grade level. The students played trivia games based on movies, sports and entertainment.
"This is a fun midyear celebration that we started years ago," said teacher Jennifer Carey, who organized the event with teacher Sherry Scott, who was unable to attend.
"Kids outgrow their clothes so quickly, so this is a great way to give them a change to get a second wear out of their most dressy attire," Carey said.
