EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP – Sal’s Café in Somers Point took top honors for its New England clam chowder at Atlantic Christian School’s Bowls of Hope Soup-Tasting Benefit Saturday, Feb. 4 in the school gymnasium.
Of the 15 restaurants who participated in the event, Sal’s was selected to receive both the Golden Spoon Award and the Chef’s Souper Soup Award.
Close to 400 people attended, sampling a variety of soup and voting for their top pick to receive the Golden Spoon Award, according to a school press release.
Chef Joseph Massaglia, who owns Mama Mia’s Ristorante in Seaville and hosts the weekly Saturday morning radio show “Table for Two” on WOND 1400 AM, tasted each soup and also selected Sal’s Café for the Chef’s Souper Soup Award.
Gregory’s Bar and Restaurant in Somers Point placed a close second in the Golden Spoon tasting with its she-crab bisque.
The fiesta clam chowder submitted by El Coyote in Galloway was the runner-up for the Souper Soup Award.
Proceeds from Bowls of Hope benefit the Atlantic City Rescue Mission and educational programs at Atlantic Christian. In addition, students in the National Honor Society spearheaded a canned food drive that collected more than 260 cans of soup and other nonperishable food items for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey Southern Branch.
Atlantic Christian Upper School Principal Susan Smith met with Colette Kraus, food sourcing coordinator for the food bank to deliver the donation, which totaled more than 350 pounds.
“We were thrilled to see so many families and friends come together to support our school and two outstanding local charities that are helping the homeless and needy in our community,” stated Chief School Administrator Karen Oblen. “We are very grateful to the participating restaurants that donated the soups and for the support from other community partners that helped make Bowls of Hope a success.”
