EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — A fire Saturday morning at the Rex Motel on Tilton Road caused $50,000 worth of damage to two units and displaced one resident, according to Farmington Fire Company Chief Leonard Tilley.

A resident of one of the units called in the fire around 6 a.m., he said.

The entire motel was evacuated, Tilley said.

“We had two units that were totally damaged,” he said.

The unit where the fire originated and an adjacent unit sustained about $50,000 in damage, he estimated.

It took firefighters 45 minutes to control the fire, Tilley said. The resident who called in the fire was relocated to another unit, but was then transported to Atlantic City Medical Center by the township medical squad for chest pain and breathing trouble.

“The fire was still under investigation when we left Saturday morning,” Tilley said.

A call to the township fire official has not been returned.

All five fire companies from the township responded, as well as the Northfield and Pleasantville fire departments. Township police and EMS assisted at the scene.
