Welcome to History Notes, our weekly feature that looks at Egg Harbor Township history. Each week, we get a chance to learn or reminisce courtesy of Lynn Wood of the Greate Egg Harbour Township Historical Society, who shares early photos of places in Egg Harbor Township with our readers.
In 1955, John and Esther Fricano fulfilled a vision of entertaining children with storybook characters and rides. John Fricano Sr. cleared land in Cardiff with hand tools, keeping many nice shade trees. A house painter by trade until 1958, Fricano built many of the early attractions at his family’s home in Vineland and made many trips back and forth to the park’s location. Esther took care of the furnishings and details of the storybook attractions.
Today it remains a family business, as the next generation of Fricanos continue to keep Storybook Land a wonderful place for families to visit.
Several rides and water features have been added through the years. Many special events such as the 1950s Vintage Car Show, Christmas in July, character parades, special fall activities for children and, of course, the lighting of thousands of lights at Christmastime make Storybook Land a place to be sure to take youngsters.
Upcoming events are listed on Storybook Land’s Facebook page.
