Avalon will hold its annual Seafood Festival Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 7-8, and organizers are promising that it will be better than ever.

The festival will take place 10 a.m.-5 p.m. both days at 30th Street and the beach. The rain date is Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 14-15.

Sponsored by the Avalon Chamber of Commerce, the festival will feature fresh seafood from local restaurants and other vendors.

There will also be a merchandise market featuring items such as home decor, jewelry, seasonal decorations, art, photography and other goods.

The Sound Advice Lounge will be back to live stream the weekend's college and NFL games, including the Eagles game kicking off 1 p.m. Sunday.

Local and seasonal beer and wine will be available for purchase.

Let's Party Events will offer activities including face painting, balloon art and a family art bar. There will also be crafts, games, music and more.

Saturday's live entertainment will be provided 10 a.m.-noon by The Reel Ting, noon-2 p.m. by Jim Fisher, and 2-4:30 p.m. by 40 North. On Sunday, M.J. Nestor will provide music 10 a.m.-noon, followed by the Michael Thompson Duo from noon-4 p.m.

One of the main attractions Sunday will be the annual chowder championship. Festival goers can taste the entries and and vote for their favorite. Last year the winning chowder was from The Watering Hull.

New this year is the inaugural Fins for Friends Surf Classic, to be held in conjunction with the seafood festival 7:30 a.m. both days on the beach, surf and weather prevailing.

The surf contest is a fundraiser for Friends in Need, a charitable organization formed by Avalon residents in 2003 to assist area children and families who find themselves in immediate need due to illness or another catastrophic event.

The entry fee is $40 for the first event and $15 for each additional event.

There will be a fish taco fiesta afterparty 5-9 p.m. at The Whitebrier. Admission is $25 and includes food and beverage.
