Ceremonies will be held throughout the region Monday to commemorate the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in memory of the nearly 3,000 lives lost in those attacks and in the hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93, which was headed toward a target in Washington but crashed to the ground in Pennsylvania.
All ceremonies are scheduled for Monday, Sept. 11 and are open to everyone.
The Cape May Kiwanis Club and the city of Cape May will hold a 9/11 Patriot Day Ceremony 6:15-7:30 p.m. Monday at the Cove, Beach Avenue and Second Avenue, Cape May. There will be speakers from local organizations and a moment of silence as the flag is lowered. For information call 609-884-8888.
The Margate City Fire Department will conducting a 9/11 remembrance ceremony 10 a.m. at Fire Department Station 1, Ventnor and Washington avenues. The service will last 15 to 20 minutes and include prayer by local clergy, musical tributes and comments by local dignitaries.
North Wildwood will hold a 9/11 anniversary commemoration 8:40 a.m. at the 15th Street Fire Station, 15th and Central avenues. For information call 609-522-2955.
Ocean City will hold its annual “A Day to Remember” 9/11 memorial ceremony 7 p.m. Monday in front of the Ocean City Fire Department headquarters between Fifth Street and Sixth Street on Asbury Avenue. It will include music, prayer and reflections on the lives lost and on the community spirit that was renewed in the wake of the tragedy, according to organizers. The event includes the Striking of the Four Fives, a fire service tradition noting the death of a firefighter in the line of duty. The guest speaker will be Becky Wynne, sister of Richard “Rick” Blood, a volunteer fire marshal who died in the World Trade Center attacks.
Sea Isle City
Sea Isle will hold its annual Patriot Day ceremony 9-10 a.m. at Veterans Park, JFK Boulevard and Pleasure Avenue. In case of inclement weather the ceremony will be moved indoors to the former Sea Isle City Public School at 4501 Park Road. For information email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Somers Point will hold a brief ceremony in remembrance of the terrorist attacks 8:30 a.m. at Patriots Park on Bethel Road and First Avenue.
Stone Harbor will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Freedom Park, 96th Street and Seng Place.
The city of Wildwood and the Wildwood Business Improvement District will hold a solemn 9/11 memorial ceremony 1 p.m. on the farmers market field, 3501 Pacific Ave. Pastors from local churches, members of the Wildwood Fire and Police departments and students from Wildwood schools will participate.
