HAMILTON TOWNSHIP — A Mays Landing man has been indicted on aggravated manslaughter charges after the death of another township man whom he struck during an assault on Route 40, authorities said.

An Atlantic County grand jury indicted Calvin Wiggins, 24, in the death of John Charlton, 54, of Mays Landing, who was struck Nov. 2, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said. Charlton died Nov. 12.

Wiggins was involved in a domestic dispute near the intersection of Cantillon Boulevard, Tyner said.

Charlton exited his vehicle and yelled for Wiggins to stop assaulting a woman, and Wiggins punched him, Tyner said. Charlton fell to the ground, struck his head and never regained consciousness.

Wiggins was initially charged with aggravated assault. Charlton was taken to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus in Atlantic City, and died from his injuries 10 days later.

Police Detective Craig Clayton handled the investigation.

Wiggins remains at the Atlantic County jail. He had a detention hearing last month.
