Sturdy Savings Bank sponsored the Nature Conservancy’s “Not Too Swifts” Team in the 27th annual World Series of Birding. The 24-hour birding competition wrapped up in Cape May on May 15. The funds will be used to help offset programming and training cost to provide a CASA volunteer for 290 children in Atlantic and Cape May counties. The Foster-Karney Fund donates monies to various organizations that are active in the areas of charity, education, literary, religion and science, in Cape May and Atlantic counties. Shore Memorial Hospital employees, family members and friends turned out in force to participate in the 2010 American Heart Association Southern New Jersey Spring Start Heart Walk on Saturday, May 22 in Ocean City. The hospital raised more than $23,000. The funds will be used to support groundbreaking pediatric stroke and heart research, as well as campaigns to get research and information about heart disease to physicians and the public. Dr. Robert Beach, medical director of the Shore Memorial Hospital Cancer Center, helps host Shore Memorial’s Celebration of Life Party on Sunday, June 6 at the hospital. The event, held in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day, provides a source of inspiration and hope to adults and children who are living with or have a history of cancer. The Ocean City Regional Chamber of Commerce recently announced the opening of R.I. Cafe, 403 14th St. in Ocean City. R.I. Cafe is a family-run business that has operated restaurants in New York City before coming to Ocean City. Chef Bao is dedicated to serving only the finest Chinese cuisine in the community, according to a statement from the chamber. Shore Memorial Hospital honored 10 employees who completed the Level 2 English as a Second Language course with a celebration on Monday, June 21 at the hospital. The course was made available to Shore Memorial employees through a grant funded by the New Jersey Department of Labor, and in conjunction with the New Jersey Community College Workforce Consortium and the New Jersey Business and Industry Association. Shore Memorial is the only hospital in the region to take part in this grant program. Judith Horn, PT, DPT, MS, GCS has been appointed program manager of wound services at Cape Regional Medical Center. Judy has served as the senior clinical resource specialist in the rehabilitation department and has led the wound committee and skin team and resource staff program for the past seven years. She received her doctorate in physical therapy from Drexel University in Philadelphia, a master’s degree in health education from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, and a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from Northeastern University in Boston. Horn is a board Certified Wound Specialist (CWS) through the American Academy of Wound Management, a fellow of the American College of Certified Wound Specialists and Wound Care Certified (WCC) through the National Alliance of Wound Care. In addition, Horn is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in Geriatrics (GCS). She was the 2009 recipient of the American Physical Therapy Association of New Jersey’s James Tucker Excellence in Clinical Practice and Teaching Award and has been an invited speaker on wound care at professional and academic programs. Horn has been a member of the Cape Regional Medical Center family since 1995… Anna Babore of Seaville has been named the Service Excellence of the Month recipient for May at Cape Regional Medical Center. Babore was nominated by Anne Goodman, director of the Early Education Center. On Friday, April 9, one of the center’s students started to choke on a snack and indicated to a teacher that he was having trouble breathing. Babore stepped in immediately to perform the Heimlich maneuver and CPR. After a few compressions, the food dislodged and the child began to breathe normally. Babore was joined by Byron Hunter, vice president of Human Resources, the child’s grandmother, Michelle Gabriel, and her co-workers as she accepted the honor from the Service Excellence Committee. Babore, and her husband, Keith, both are long-time employees of Cape Regional Medical Center. The couple has three children. Anna graduated from LaSalle University in 1984 with a bachelor of science in business administration. Babore joined the Early Education Team in August 1990 as the secretary for the Early Education Center. She left in July 1994 to serve as assistant director of Tomorrow’s World Preschool. Kenny received his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2003. He completed his residencies in internal medicine at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby, Pa. in 2004 and in diagnostic radiology at Drexel University in Philadelphia in 2008. He completed his fellowship in body imaging at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in 2009. Board certified in radiology, Kenny will practice with Atlantic Medical Imaging in Galloway Township. Michele Piccone, M.D., has joined with privileges in ophthalmology. Dr. Piccone received her medical degree from the Albany Medical College of Union University in 1984. She completed her medical internship at Presbyterian University of Pennsylvania Medical Center in Philadelphia in 1985, her residency in ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute Department of Ophthalmology in Philadelphia in 1987and her fellowship in ocular oncology at the Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia in 2002. Board certified in ophthalmology, Piccone will practice at Quality Eye Associates with Linwood… Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors recently honored Bill Smith Jr., a sales associate from the Ocean City-55th Street Office, with an Honor Society Award for his excellent sales performance for 2009. Perna-Costello began her journey at Shore Memorial Hospital in 2005 as a student in the school of radiology. After graduating and completing registry requirements, she accepted a part-time radiographer position and began training at the Ocean City Outpatient Center in preparation for a move to the Egg Harbor Township (EHT) Outpatient Center. Her leadership skills and competencies as a registrar and phlebotomist quickly earned her a promotion to lead technologist in March 2008, according to the hospital. Currently enrolled in California Coast University, Perna-Costello is working towards a bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration… Madeline P. Tan, M.D., has joined the Shore Memorial Hospital medical staff with privileges in pediatrics. Dr. Tan received her medical degree from the Gullas College of Medicine in Mandaue City, Philippines. She completed a one-year internship in medicine, surgery, pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and family medicine at the Chong Hua Hospital in Cebu City, Philippines in 1986. She completed her residency in pediatrics at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Patterson in 1998. Board certified in pediatrics, Tan will practice at Tender Care Pediatrics in Northfield… Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors recently honored Paul Gilbert, a sales associate from the Ocean City-34th Street office, with an Honor Society Award for his excellent sales performance for 2009. Russell earned associate degrees in liberal arts and general studies from Atlantic Cape, a bachelor’s in English and creative writing from New York University, a master’s in secondary education from New School University and a master’s in English literature from University College at the University of London. The Borough of Woodbine awarded a contract for road reconstruction for Scott Avenue to South State Inc., Bridgeton. This reconstruction of Scott Avenue is from DeHirsch Boulevard (County Route 550) to Freidriechstadt Avenue. Scott Avenue serves as an access route to the borough’s major industrial/commercial complex. This access route is a heavily traveled corridor for large vehicles. The project is set to include construction of curbing, concrete apron, storm drainage improvements, milling and paving the street, and topsoil and seed restoration. Funding in the amount of $174,000 from the New Jersey Department of Transportation Municipal Aid program was awarded for this project. The project will also provide more exposure for the borough’s expanding industrial park, which just saw the opening of a brand new facility, Paraco Gas, one of the largest propane company distributors, according to borough officials… In acknowledgement of its dedication to the health and well being of employees and their families, Shore Memorial Hospital has been named a Gold Standard Employer by the CEO Roundtable on Cancer. This designation recognizes Shore Memorial for helping employees and their family members reduce their risk of developing cancer through healthy lifestyles, to detect cancer early and for ensuring access to the best available treatment for those who are diagnosed with cancer, according to the hospital. The CEO Roundtable on Cancer is a nonprofit organization comprised of chief executives from major American companies representing diverse industries. The CEO Roundtable works in collaboration with the American Cancer Society to encourage organizations to adopt the CEO Cancer Gold Standard to help fight cancer in workplaces across the country… The Auxiliary of Shore Memorial and its 17th annual women’s golf tournament raised close to $10,000 for Shore Tomorrow - The Campaign for Shore Memorial Hospital. This year’s event took place on Monday, May 17 at Linwood Country Club and drew 77 golfers. Grand sponsorship of the tournament was provided by the Shore Memorial medical staff.
