AVALON — A benefit brunch to aid Haitian Cardinal Chibly Langlois’ efforts to rebuild churches in Haiti is planned 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4 at the Icona Golden Inn, 7849 Dune Drive in Avalon.

A $100 donation is requested, payable to “Hand-to-hand Mission” in Haiti, 293 S. Shore Road, Marmora, 08223. Sponsorships for larger amounts are also available.

The funds aim to help Langlois rebuild churches in the Diocese of Les Cayes, destroyed in Hurricane Matthew. The late season, category 5 hurricane slammed the impoverished Caribbean nation Oct. 4, damaging crops, buildings and infrastructure. Hundreds of thousands of homes were leveled, and estimates put the damage in the billions of dollars.

One of the poorest countries in the hemisphere, Haiti was still recovering from a catastrophic earthquake in 2010.
