Sarah Hughes has been named the Middle Township Middle School Girls Softball Player of the Week. Hughes is a second year player who has been a pitcher and middle infielder over the course of two seasons. School officials said she has elevated her skills to become the team’s top pitcher and has performed at a high level in the first two games of this season. Hughes pitched a complete game in the first game where all the runs she gave up were unearned. In the second game, Hughes came into the game with the bases loaded and no outs and struck out the side to preserve a shutout. School officials said that Hughes is a dedicated softball player who works hard at her craft and displays the same dedication to her academics. They said that Hughes’s grades, athletic skills, and friendly demeanor all point to a bright future.
Luke Salvo is Middle Township Middle School Boys Baseball Player of the Week. Salvo started out his eighth-grade season - after a good seventh-grade year - with a 5-0 complete game shutout against rival Lower Teitleman, school officials said. Lower’s team scattered a handful of hits against Salvo, however, consistency within the strike zone by Salvo and great defense assisted Salvo from the hill, coaches said. School officials said that Salvo is a quiet but positive team leader who leads by example and is willing to do whatever the team needs to be better. His teammates respond to him very well, they said.
