Backyard chickens

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension will offer a workshop titled "Raising Chickens in Your Backyard" Tuesday, Feb. 6 at its Cape May Court House headquarters.

The program will be presented by Jen Sawyer, coordinator of the Rutgers Master Gardener program for Cape May County.

Participants will learn basic care of laying hens, breed selection, and feeding, housing and health requirements.

The workshop is the first in a new 2018 series of "Garden & Grow” workshops being offered by Rutgers and the Cape May County Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“We are excited to include this program to kick off our ‘Garden & Grow’ 2018 workshop series,” said Jenny S. Carleo, county agent for the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

“The goal of this new series is to teach locals how to improve or expand their home gardens in new ways,” Carleo said.

Other topics to be presented this year include growing vegetables, organic lawn care, and the principles of organic growing.

"Raising Chickens in Your Backyard" runs 5:30-8 p.m. at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 355 Courthouse-South Dennis Road in Cape May Court House.

The cost is $20 and includes dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6 p.m. No experience is necessary.
