"What Were They Thinking: 160 Years of Bad Taste" Exhibit—As times change so do tastes. From hoop-skirted ladies and the tendency to ornament the ornaments so popular in the Victorian era, to the 1950s beehive hairdos and tailfins, to today's over-the-top bling and pocketbook dogs, this exhibit looks at how styles change as the times do. The Carriage House Gallery is at the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. Gallery is open daily; times vary. Cape May's fifth annual Designer Show House—The region's top designers and suppliers have transformed the Carpenter Cottage at 511 Franklin Street into Cape May's fifth annual Designer Show House. This mid-19th century Carpenter Gothic style home is open for daily self-guided tours and can be combined with breakfast, lunch and dinner packages and special events and is open daily, Sundays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays only 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 884-5404 or 800-275-4278 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

BBQ Pork Dinner—The Episcopal Church Men of the Church of the Advent in Cape May will be holding a Barbecue Pork Dinner with Father Jim’s beans, cole slaw, rolls and beverage, on Friday, Aug. 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall, 612 Franklin Street. Art in the Park—The West Cape May History Committee presents “Art in the Park,” a juried art and fine crafts event featuring South Jersey artists. Proceeds benefit the WCM History Committee. Hobby Fair—From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Cold Spring Village, rediscover favorite hobbies and pastimes at the Village. 400th Anniversary Celebration—The city of Cape May and the 400th Anniversary Celebration Committee will stage a grand 400th Anniversary Parade beginning at 11 a.m. with line up starting at 10 a.m. at Pittsburgh and Beach avenues. The parade route is Beach Avenue from Pittsburgh Avenue to Patterson Avenue with the review stand at Convention Hall. This parade is dedicated to Cape May’s 400th Anniversary Commemorating Henry Hudson’s discovery of Cape Island in 1609 aboard his sailing vessel “The Half Moon.” Charles “Bud” Swain and Patricia Mulligan, the 400th Anniversary celebration king and queen, will serve as the Grand Marshals. The parade will feature many performing groups including the United States Coast Guard Band and Color Guard, the Fralinger String Band, the South Philadelphia String Band, the Quaker City String Band, the North Wildwood Pipe and Drum Band, the Bonsal Blues String Band, Lower Cape May Regional Marching Band and the Hobo Band to name a few. Anyone wishing to participate is asked to call the Cape May Civic Affairs at 884-9565. The event will be rain or shine, as there is no rain date.

Seafarers Weekend—The pirates are coming! Celebrate all things nautical at this maritime event, from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Cold Spring Village. There will be pirate shows, music and demonstrations related to Cape May’s 400th anniversary. Come in costume and enter the Kiddie Pirate Contest. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors over 62, $6 for children age 3 to 12 and free for children under 3. Call 898-2300 for more information.

Clamshell Tournament—Cape May and the International Clamshell Pitching Club of Cape May will jointly conduct the 63rd annual Cape May Junior Clamshell Tournament for boys and girls ages 6 to18 at noon on Windsor Beach. Registration begins at 11 a.m.
The tournament director is Stephanie Stephens, the resident expert on clamshell tossing, and daughter of Rich Reinhart. Ribbons and trophies will be awarded to the winners. For information call Cape May Civic Affairs 884-9565.

Tomato Festival—The West Cape May Tomato Festival, featuring Jersey grown tomatoes, food, fine vendors, South Jersey Artists, handmade jewelry and stained glass will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Wilbraham Park, corner of Broadway and Perry Street. The 17th Annual Summer Send—Off Craft Show will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Approximately 100 crafters will participate and display a diversity of handcrafted items outside Convention Hall. Admission is free. Interested crafters call Cape May Civic Affairs 884-9565.

Revolutionary War Encampment—From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Historic Cold Spring Village, see authentically garbed reenactors from Morgan's Rifle Corps and Lamb's Artillery do demonstrations of camp life, infantry tactics, artillery and more. Civil War Weekend—Historic Cold Spring Village will bring the Civil War to life from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Military encampments from the Blue and the Gray, with demonstrations of infantry drill, weaponry, vendors of reproduction period merchandise, and artillery fire. Battle reenactments will take place at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors over 62, $6 for children age 3 to 12 and free for children under 3. Call 898-2300 for more information.
A Civil War memorial service will be held Sunday at 9 a.m. at Cold Spring Presbyterian Church. The public is welcome.

Vendors in the Park—Benefiting the West Cape May Community Christmas Parade, there will be a “Vendors in Wilbraham Park” event featuring food, entertainment and fun. The event will be located in Wilbraham Park, corner of Broadway and Perry Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. During the event, the Christmas Parade Queen and her Court will be announced. Jazz Vespers—Jazz Vespers presents a Benefit Concert featuring several outstanding jazz performers at the First Presbyterian Church, Hughes and Decatur streets in Cape May at 7:30 p.m. Among the performers will be Grammy-nominated George Mesterhazy, Grammy-winning jazz pianist Barry Miles, singer Lois Smith, trumpeter Bob Ferguson, saxophone player Michael Pedicin, singer Rita Stafford, The Herb Moore Trio, vibes player Behn Gellice and the Antfarm Trio. Money raised will support First Presbyterian’s many community programs including theater and musical arts groups, support groups, a community food closet and mission work. Beachfront Run—The 26th annual Cape May Beachfront Run will host two separate runs, at 8:30 a.m. will be the two-mile run and at 9:15 a.m. will be the five-mile run. The event begins at the Cape May Convention Hall. Both courses are certified. Applications can be downloaded on www.capemaycity.org under “Permits and Applications,” or call Cape May Civic Affairs 884-9565 or stop at Cape May Convention Hall for an application.

Christmas Parade Fundraiser—The West Cape May community Christmas Parade fundraiser is held in Wilbraham Park, to benefit the annual parade. The event features plenty of hometown treats, entertainment and good company. A high light of the day comes when the new Christmas Parade Queen and her Court are crowned from among our local schoolchildren. The rain date is Sept. 27. Lima Bean Festival—The West Cape May annual Lima Bean Festival is the one event you must attend. Come out and celebrate West Cape May's farming heritage with great food, quality vendors, antiques, entertainment and fun. You will never think of legumes in the same way again. Located in Wilbraham Park, corner of Broadway and Perry Street, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., call 884-9325 for information. The rain date is Oct. 11.

•Sunday, Nov. 15•
125th Anniversary—The borough of West Cape May celebrates its 125th anniversary. The West Cape May History Committee invites the public to participate in this landmark occasion celebrating the anniversary of our borough’s incorporation in 1884 with a Gala Dinner. A festive evening is being planned for the community at the West Cape May Fire Hall, from 6 to 9 p.m. with dinner, folklore and friendship on the menu. Tickets will be available at Borough Hall for $15. Tickets will also be available at the Aug. 22 Art in the Park and the Oct.10 Lima Bean Festival.

Christmas Crafts—The 23rd Annual Christmas Craft Show will take place in Cape May City Elementary School from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A variety of crafters will be participating.  Interested crafters call Cape May Civic Affairs 884-9565.

Christmas Parade—The 44rd annual West Cape May Christmas Parade will be at 5 p.m. beginning in front of the WCM Fire Hall. With over three hours of family fun and entertainment, the parade proceeds south on Broadway to West Perry and onto the Washington Street Mall. Call 884-1005 for information. The rain date is Dec. 6.
