Assault at Wawa leaves Rio Grande man unconscious

RIO GRANDE—An Erma man who assaulted a Rio Grande man at a local Wawa convenience store on Sunday, Sept. 13 has been arrested and placed in jail, police say.
Middle Township Police received a 911 call at about 12:39 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13 reporting that a man had been assaulted outside of the Rio Grande Wawa. Upon police arrival they found 28-year-old Joseph Unkle lying on the ground unconscious. The accused fled the scene on foot. Cape May County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit responded and attempted to track the offender, but had negative results. Unkle was transported to AtlantiCare Medical Center for his injuries by Rio Grande Rescue.
Ongoing investigation resulted in the arrest of 22-year-old Patrick F. Dougherty Jr. from Erma. He was charged with aggravated assault and was placed in the county jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail.
