DAV to hold flag retirement ceremony and memorial for Scusa

Oct, 08-2009 3:09 pm

At 1:30 pm at the Cape May County Park South (across the street from D.A.V. Headquarters, 1010 Bayshore Rd, Del Haven), D.A.V. Chapter 44 will hold their ninth annual Formal Flag Retirement Ceremony.

In addition, a memorial service will be held for Army Spc. Michael P. Scusa. Scusa, 22, of Villas, was named as one of the eight American soldiers killed on Oct. 3 during an insurgent attack near the Pakistan border as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Officials called it one of the deadliest attacks on US troops in more than a year.
Scusa was a 2005 graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School. He was killed just before his 23rd birthday, Monday, Oct. 5.
Scusa’s body was returned to his family on Tuesday, Oct. 6 at the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware. He is survived by his wife Alyssa and son Connor, of Colorado, and his mother Cynthia Woodard of Mount Holly.
According to the Air Force mortuary affairs office, Tuesday’s dignified transfer ceremony will also included the bodies of Sgt. Joshua J. Kirk of South Portland, Maine; Spc. Christopher T. Griffin of Kincheloe, Mich.; and Pfc. Kevin C. Thomson of Reno, Nev.

If you have a tattered, torn or faded flag or know anyone who has one and wants to have it put to rest in the proper manner, please contact D.A.V. Chapter 44 or drop them off at the Chapter Headquarters on or before 10 a.m. on Sunday. Flags will be treated with dignity and the respect they deserve. The ceremony is open to the public and all organizations are invited to attend.

Please RSVP Johnnie Walker at 425-8608 or jw_enterprise@verizon.net
