Cell phones for soldiers

The Margate City Public Library is collecting old cell phones so American troops can "phone home." Drop donations off at the library, The Margate Library is located at 8100 Atlantic Avenue and is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.



Author David Kushner to speak

David Kushner, author of “Levittown: Two families, One Tycoon and the Fight for Civil Rights in America’s Legendary Suburb,” will be the first in a series of five Jewish authors appearing at the JCC this fall. The talk begins 7:30 p.m. Thursday,

Oct. 22. The book explores the events that unfolded in 1957 when an entrepreneur helped thousands of people buy into the American dream of owning a home, and a white Jewish communist family secretly arranged for a black family to purchase one. Pink Angels Night at Taj

The Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund, which assists area residents who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, is partnering with Trump Taj Mahal for Pink Angels Night 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at Ego Bar and Lounge in the Taj Mahal. There will be pink drinks, hors d’ oeuvres, a performance by The Angels, a silent auction, prize drawings and a “pink jack” tournament. Guests are invited to attend the event to benefit the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund.



Blood drive

Beth El Synagogue, 500 Jerome Ave., will hold blood drive noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27. Appointments are suggested, but walk-ins will be accepted. Call (609) 823-2725 to schedule an appointment or for additional information.



Library closed for training

The Margate Public Library will be closed all day Wednesday, Oct. 28 for staff training. Normal hours will resume Thursday, Oct.29 at 9:30 a.m.



Author Mark Ozer to speak

Mark Ozer, author of “The Litvak Legacy,” will speak 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center as part of the festival of the arts series. Ozer studied modern European history at Harvard, pursued a career in neuroscience and has toured the country to lecture on the history of cities throughout the world. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the JCC, 501 Jerome Ave., or by calling (609) 822-1167, ext. 115.



NBA/WNBA Fit Challenge

The Jewish Community Center will host a free NBA/WNBA Fit challenge Sunday, Nov. 8 for children age 5-14. The fitness competition is intended to encourage participation and emphasize the fun element of physical fitness. Advance registration is required. Coffee house

Beth El Synagogue will host a coffee house with cantor Ralph Goren and members of Beth El Synagogue at 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov.15. Admission is $5 and includes light snacks. To make a reservation or for information call (609) 823-2725.



Beth El holiday bazaar

Beth El Synagogue will hold a holiday bazaar 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22 at 500 Jerome Avenue in Margate. To reserve a vendor spot call Joyce at (609) 823-2725. Table rental is $50 for 6-foot table; discount available for more than one.



Tennis lessons

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community offers private and small group

tennis lessons on the Margate City Courts and in the gym with instructor Jason Schwartz, recreation director. Private lessons are $40 an hour for members and $60 an hour for nonmembers; $25 per half-hour for members and $37.50 for nonmembers. Semiprivate lessons are $20 an hour for members and $30 and hour for nonmembers.
