Cell phones for soldiers
The Margate City Public Library is collecting old cell phones so American troops can "phone home." Drop donations off at the library, The Margate Library is located at 8100 Atlantic Avenue and is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Author Mark Ozer to speak
Mark Ozer, author of “The Litvak Legacy,” will speak 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center as part of the festival of the arts series. Ozer studied modern European history at Harvard, pursued a career in neuroscience and has toured the country to lecture on the history of cities throughout the world. Pinktober Halloween
The Hard Rock Café in Atlantic City is teaming up with the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Assistance Fund for the Shark fourth annual Halloween party and a silent auction 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Proceeds from the $5 admission price will benefit the fund. There will be a $750 first prize for best costume. The Hard Rock Café is at Trump Taj Mahal, 1000 Boardwalk at Virginia Avenue.
Teachers convention mini-camp
The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center will offer projects, cooking, sports, nature and swimming in a two-day camp 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Nov. 5 and 6 during the New Jersey Education Association Convention. There will also be a half-day trip to Bounce U Friday, Nov. 6. Cost is $50 for members and $75 for nonmembers. Morning care is available 7:30 to 9 a.m. and aftercare 4 to 6 p.m. for $10 per child. St. Nicholas luncheon and Christmas boutique
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Community Center is holding a family luncheon, Christmas boutique and bid ’n’ buy 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at 13 S. St. Nicholas Way in Atlantic City. NBA/WNBA Fit Challenge
The Jewish Community Center will host a free NBA/WNBA Fit challenge Sunday, Nov. 8 for children age 5-14. The fitness competition is intended to encourage participation and emphasize the fun element of physical fitness. Advance registration is required. Veterans ceremony
The Margate Board of Recreation will honor Margate veterans with a ceremony 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the All Wars Memorial on the parkway at Mansfield and Ventnor avenues. There will be speakers as well as the winners of the student essay contest.
Margate Players present ‘Godspell’
The Margate Players will present “Godspell” 7 p.m. Friday Nov. 13, Saturday Nov. 14 and 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15 at the Dominick A. Potena Performing Arts Center on Monmouth and Frontenac avenues in Margate. Produced by Doug Winkelstein, the production boasts a string of recognizable songs and appeals to all ages and religions. Retired teachers of Judaica to be honored
The Board of Jewish Education will honor the community’s retired teachers of Judaica Saturday, Jan. 30. The event will include a concert by Pizmon, the a capella group from the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, followed by a ceremony. Teachers’ names will become part of a wall of honor for Judaic educators within the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May offices in Margate. Tennis lessons
The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community offers private and small group
tennis lessons on the Margate City Courts and in the gym with instructor Jason Schwartz, recreation director. Private lessons are $40 an hour for members and $60 an hour for nonmembers; $25 per half-hour for members and $37.50 for nonmembers. Semiprivate lessons are $20 an hour for members and $30 and hour for nonmembers.
