Seniors learn what employers want to know

Oct, 28-2009 3:19 pm

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – Absegami High School seniors learned to make an impression on would-be employers during a resume writing workshop Oct. 14.

Students in Kim Vasile’s English classes heard a presentation by Cora Perone, assistant director of career services at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.

The question on every prospective employer’s mind as they read submitted resumes, Perone told them, is “What's in it for me?”

Students learned resume-building tactics that are vital to job searching.

They learned to be clear about their employment objective, and how to customize the resume to match the position applied being sought. They discovered that concisely stating education, leadership, honors and awards, activities and volunteerism is also important.

Full contact information, previous employment and experience were stressed, in addition to providing skills and qualifications applicable to the intended position, all of which will hopefully motivate the resume reader to take positive action.
