Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

During the week of Nov. 1-7, the Atlantic County Animal Shelter wil celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week by reminding residents of the important services it provides to the community. In addition to 1,203 pet adoptions so far this year, the shelter has united 510 lost animals with their owners and transferred 140 animals to area rescue groups. The shelter holds free monthly rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats; 1,350 pets were vaccinated at county clinics last year. Hazardous waste collection

The Atlantic County Utilities Authority will hold a household hazardous waste collection for Atlantic County residents from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at the ACUA Environmental Park, 6700 Delilah Road in Egg Harbor Township. CASA inducts 17 as children's advocates

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Atlantic and Cape May Counties held a swearing-in ceremony for 17 new volunteer advocates on Thursday, Oct. 29. The new advocates are: Yasna Babich and Akilah Hughes of Pleasantville, Louise Dietz of Seaville, Bianca Doster and Rondell Showell of Atlantic City, Anne Feilinger of Galloway Township, Florence Novek and Joan Quilligan of Margate, Marie Quilter and Janet Shapiro of Mays Landing, Judy Saracco of Villas, Joe Schmidt of Cape May, Susan Schneider of Linwood, Maisha Scudder of Absecon, John Szramiak of Ocean View, Darah Walther of Sweetwater, and Linda Wright of Petersburg. The ceremony marked the end of a 30-hour intensive training program for the volunteers, who will each advocate for the best interests of a child in the foster care system. American Legion seeks clothing, canned food

The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit 352 is collecting sweatpants, sweatshirts, and T-shirts in sizes medium to extra large for wounded servicemen in Afghanistan who need something to wear while being transported to hospitals. Clothes are being collected through Wednesday, Nov. 18 and may be lightly used but in good condition. The Sons of the American Legion, Unit 352 are also collecting canned goods for the food bank until Wednesday, Nov. 25. Clothing or food can be dropped off daily after 3 p.m. at the Legion building, First Street and Pennsylvania Avenue in Somers Point. For questions email mpicucci@comcast.net.



Light bulb distribution in Brigantine

New Jersey Public Interest Research Group Energy Service Corps volunteers from the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will partner with Project Porchlight to distribute more than 1,000 free compact fluorescent light bulbs in Brigantine from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Community Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. An Evening of Gratitude

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, eWomenNetwork will host An Evening of Gratitude at The Pool at Harrah’s Atlantic City to showcase several area non-profit organizations. In addition, eWomenNetwork Southern New Jersey will be presenting its annual “Sweet Charity Award” to Atlantic City Electric. Tickets are $25 for members, $30 for non-members, and $35 for all registrations made after Nov. 6. Dog obedience classes

Pinelands K-9 Club instructors will conduct a six-week training session for all puppies and dogs beginning Tuesday, Nov. 10 at the Atlantic County 4-H Club on Route 50 between Mays Landing and Egg Harbor City. The Atlantic City Hotel and Lodging Association will hold its monthly networking luncheon meeting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 in the Club Harlem Ballroom of Showboat Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. ACCC approves computational science option

The Board of Trustees at Atlantic Cape Community College approved a new degree option, effective spring 2010, at their Oct. 27 meeting. The computational science option, computer information systems associate in science degree, is designed for students wishing to transfer into The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey's baccalaureate program in computational science.



Symphony receives $40,000 grant

The Bay-Atlantic Symphony has been awarded a $40,000 grant from the New Jersey Cultural Trust, a division of the Department of State which aims to sustain a stable and healthy cultural industry. The Bay-Atlantic Symphony, now in its 26th year, provides classical music concerts and music education lectures in Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland and Gloucester counties. Skilled gardeners sought as teachers

Atlantic County residents who enjoy gardening and would like to take their skills to the next level are sought for the Atlantic County Master Gardener Program sponsored by Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Atlantic County, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station. Tax credit for winterizing homes

Homeowners can receive an energy tax credit for eligible energy-saving home improvements for a maximum of $1,500, according to the Internal Revenue Service. Another tax credit is available for qualifying energy-efficient improvements such as solar, wind or geothermal systems.
