Cell phones for soldiers

The Margate City Public Library is collecting old cell phones so American troops can "phone home." Drop donations off at the library, The Margate Library is located at 8100 Atlantic Avenue and is open 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday; 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. 

Charter Tech open house

The performing arts and technology departments at Charter Tech High School will host an open house 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 at the high school on New Road in Somers Point. Parents and students can learn about artistic majors, meet teachers, sign up for an audition date and shadow visit, tour the facility and learn about performance and technical arts opportunities, course curriculum and requirements. Jewish Author Series

The Jewish Author Series at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center continues 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 with biographer Edward Klein, speaking on “Ted Kennedy, The Dream That Never Died.” Klein reconciles the roles Kennedy played, from thrill-seeker to effective legislator and caring father and uncle, painting a portrait of Kennedy and his late-in-life redemption. Operation Medicine Cabinet

The Margate Police Department, as part of Operation Medicine Cabinet will be collecting unused, outdated and expired medications 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 14 at Margate City Hall, 2 S. Washington Ave. The police will see that the medications are disposed of properly and don’t fall into the wrong hands.

Atlantic City Marathon

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center has partnered with the Boardwalk Runners to present the 51st annual Atlantic City Marathon Sunday, Nov. 15. The event consists of a marathon, half-marathon, 10K and 5K runs, a two-mile walk and a kid’s fun run. It will start and end on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in front of Convention Hall. Beth El coffeehouse

Beth El Synagogue will host a coffeehouse with cantor Ralph Goren and members of Beth El Synagogue 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 15. Admission is $5 and includes light snacks. To make a reservation or for information call (609) 823-2725.

Economic resource roundtable

Community experts will present roundtable discussions on employment, financial resources, housing, legal matters, stress reduction, time management or parenting at a session sponsored by the Rothenberg Center for Family Life at Jewish Family Services of Atlantic and Cape May counties 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 607 N. Foreign Film Night

The Margate Library will hold a foreign film night 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 with “Kings,” a movie about people who left Ireland for London to seeking opportunities for a better life and reunite 30 years later to take stock of their lives. It will be shown in the meeting room of the library, 8100 Atlantic Ave.

Jewish Author Series finale

The final evening of the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center Jewish author series 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 will end on a humorous note as authors Daniel Klein and Thomas Cathcart will talk about their book “Heidegger and a Hippo Walk Through Those Pearly Gates: Using Philosophy (and Jokes!) To Explore Life, Death, the Afterlife, and Everything in Between.” The authors take a humorous look on the philosophy, theology and psychology of mortality and immortality of death as well as life. Retired teachers of Judaica to be honored

The Board of Jewish Education will honor the community’s retired teachers of Judaica Saturday, Jan. 30. The event will include a concert by Pizmon, the a capella group from the Jewish Theological Seminary of New York, followed by a ceremony. Teachers’ names will become part of a wall of honor for Judaic educators within the Jewish Federation of Atlantic and Cape May offices in Margate. Beth El holiday bazaar

Beth El Synagogue will hold a holiday bazaar 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 22 at 500 Jerome Avenue in Margate. To reserve a vendor spot call Joyce at (609) 823-2725. Table rental is $50 for 6-foot table; discount available for more than one.

Mahjong brunch 

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center will host a mahjong brunch 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30. There will be a bagel brunch spread, raffle prizes and hours of mahjong competition. Admission is $8 for members and $12 for nonmembers through Nov. 23; $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers afterward. Brunch and Learn

Rabbi Avi Rappoport of Chabad will speak at a Brunch and Learn event 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8 at the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center about harnessing the inner light of Chanukah. He will discuss the story, morals and traditions of the ancient holiday as they are relevant today. After the discussion the film “Decoding the Past, Secrets of Kabbalah” will be shown. Tennis lessons

The Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community offers private and small group

tennis lessons on the Margate City Courts and in the gym with instructor Jason Schwartz, recreation director. Private lessons are $40 an hour for members and $60 an hour for nonmembers; $25 per half-hour for members and $37.50 for nonmembers. Semiprivate lessons are $20 an hour for members and $30 and hour for nonmembers.
