AVALON READY FOR SECOND HIGH TIDE EVENT ON FRIDAY

Coastal flooding possible at times of high tide through Saturday

Nov, 13-2009 3:52 pm

(Avalon, NJ)—The Borough of Avalon experienced moderate to severe coastal flooding during the Friday
morning high tide event, and more coastal flooding is expected during times of high tide Friday evening,
and Saturday morning.

“Avalon experienced significant flooding along parts of Ocean Drive and Dune Drive this morning”, said
Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi.  “Fortunately, many residents paid attention to warnings and moved their
vehicles to higher ground.  We are advising residents to move their vehicles out of flood prone areas
again this evening.”

Friday morning’s high tide on the back bays came in shortly before 5:00am Friday.  Water quickly piled up
on Ocean Drive, and Dune Drive.  During the height of the high tide event, access to Avalon via Avalon
Boulevard was interrupted for about three hours until the water levels dropped, around 8:30am.  Avalon’s
north end beaches took another hit during this storm, and more sand was lost during this storm.

A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect in Avalon until Saturday, 10:00am.  A Wind Advisory for Avalon
will expire Friday, at 4:00pm.  Avalon officials expect to experience moderate to possibly severe coastal
flooding at time of high tide late Friday afternoon, with similar coastal flooding possible during high tide
on Saturday morning.  Here are the posted high tides for Avalon for the next 36 hours; flooded streets
remain for at least a few hours beyond the posted time for high tide:

Friday:  High tide at 5:11pm
Saturday:  High tide at 5:44am, and again at 6:00pm

Emergency management officials have contacted shut ins in Avalon, offering the Avalon Firehouse as an
evacuation location.  Anyone who lives in town, feels that their safety is compromised by this coastal storm,
and who do not have the means to relocate offshore are encouraged to call Avalon Police at (609) 967-3411.
The second floor of the firehouse will be available for residents to ride out this storm event.

Here are some very important safety tips to keep in mind:

*If you have any emergency at all, please contact the Avalon Police Department at 967-3411, or dial 911.

*Do not attempt to drive on any flooded streets, or through any flooded intersections.  The water is always
deeper than it appears to be.  You put yourself, your vehicle, and emergency personnel at risk by making
any decision to drive on a flooded street.  On Thursday evening, Avalon rescue personnel had to remove a
few individuals from their vehicles after they attempted to drive on flooded streets.

*If you see a power line that is down, do not touch it.  Contact Avalon Police with the exact location
immediately.  There have been some scattered power outages, and electrical transformer issues, during
this coastal storm.

*Do not park your vehicle on any grassy median in Avalon.  Do not park your vehicle on any bridge that
would impede traffic or emergency responders.

Updates are available on Avalon’s website at www.avalonboro.org.  Updates are also available on
Avalon’s radio station, 1630AM.  And, Comcast television customers can get updates any time during
this storm event on ShoreTV Channel 2.
