About 50 Brigantine residents and Richard Stockton College of New Jersey students went door-to-door to distribute 500 compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs in designated areas of the community Sunday, Nov. 8.

The event was organized by Alexandra Wenholz, the Stockton organizer for NJPIRG’s Energy Service Corps, a joint project of New Jersey Public Interest Research Group and AmeriCorps.

“We are so fortunate to work in partnership with Project Porchlight; we both have the same goal – to make New Jersey energy efficient,” she said

The event was a success thanks to the 20 volunteers from the Community Presbyterian Church’s Crossroads Youth Group.

“It was truly inspiring to see the youth of New Jersey champion energy efficiency in their community,” Wenholz added.

“It’s the solution to pollution. The CFLs use 75 percent less energy and last five times longer,” said Ellie Corbitt, a Crossroads volunteer.

Putting a free energy-efficient bulb in someone’s hand for them to install gives them the power to decrease energy consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and communicate a critical message: Saving money and protecting the environment start with simple actions like changing a light bulb.
