SEA ISLE CITY—A Northfield man who went missing Monday night after being arrested for starting a fire was located in Cherry Hill on Monday evening.
Steven Tyman, 51, was charged with arson and burglary on Sunday, Nov. 22, after police were alerted of a small fire in the attic of 4204 Landis Avenue, Sea Isle City, where he owns and operates his own business. Around 2:40 p.m., Sea Isle City Police received a call from the owners of the building where Tyman's store, Jamaican Me Crazy, is located. According to Det. Sgt. Kirk Rohrer, the owners were doing some work on the second floor that afternoon when they smelled the smoke. The owner's son found a box of files that was smoldering and quickly brought it outside. When police arrived, they were able to put out the fire. Rohrer said there was minimal damage to the attic.
Investigation continued in the attic where Tyman was located hiding behind a mattress. Tyman admitted to starting the fire and was arrested and brought to the county jail. Rohrer said Tyman explained he started the fire due to tensions with the owners over repairs and rent. After posting bail at the county jail, Tyman was released and went home. Sometime that evening or early morning, Tyman left his home without any of his belongings.
His wife called and reported him missing to the Northfield Police Department, Rohrer said. She told police that she was worried he may be suicidal.
After locating Tyman in Cherry Hill, he was taken by police to a hospital for evaluation.
