Police vacancy not expected to last long

Nov, 24-2009 12:30 pm

ABSECON – City Council at its Nov. 19 meeting put preparations in place to fill a vacancy in the police department which is anticipated at the end of the month.

“We anticipate having a vacancy in the police department at the end of the day Nov. 30,” said Council President Lynn Caterson.

If the person leaves as expected, Caterson said Chief Joseph Cowan has recommended that Jeffrey Mazer be hired as a full-time patrol officer.

According to City Administrator Terry Dolan, Ptl. David Crawford has submitted paperwork to retire on the last day of November. He has been an officer in Absecon for more than 20 years.

Council agreed to place a resolution for Mazer’s hiring on the agenda for its next meeting Dec. 3 and having him sworn in on that date. He would earn $43,967 as a starting patrolman.

No biographical information was available on Mazer.

Caterson, Dolan and Mayor Peter Elco all deferred to Police Chief Joseph Cowan who was not available for comment.
