Ocean City High School football coach Kevin Smith knows his Red Raiders play in a competitive conference with the likes of Cedar Creek and St. Joseph of Hammonton, but Smith still likes his team’s chances this season.
“We have 14 starters returning and some new players that came out for the team,” Smith said. “We feel we should be competitive.”
The Raiders’ main weapon is senior Issac Robertson, a 6-foot, 185-pound two-way threat. Last year, Robertson had 920 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns while picking off three passes on the other side of the ball.
“Issac is an incredibly versatile athlete who will play running back, wide receiver and defensive back for us,” Smith said. “He has all-South Jersey potential.”
The Raiders’ quarterback this season is senior Harry Pfeifle, a two-year starter at defensive back before missing last season with a knee injury. Junior Ian Aungst will also see time as a signal-caller.
Ocean City’s newcomers to the roster are intriguing.
Senior offensive lineman Victor Mahar is a transfer from St. Augustine Prep who started 11 games for the Hermits last season.
Senior Josh Rolls, a wide receiver/defensive back, is the school record-holder in the 100 meters who’s playing football for the first time, while junior Marty Cattie is making the jump from lacrosse. He will play running back and linebacker.
According to Smith, the Raiders will see leadership from senior offensive lineman Art Spackman, who will serve as team captain.
“He’s a throwback-type kid,” Smith said. “He wears a beat-up old helmet and loves to do everything at full speed. He’s a great leader and his teammates love him.”
