OCEAN CITY — The annual Run for the Fallen in New Jersey passed through Ocean City Thursday, Sept. 22.

Each year, a group of military service members run 188 miles over four days throughout the state in memory of service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Runners pause at a memorial marker at the end of each marker to salute fallen service members and the sacrifices made by their Gold Star families.

Runners entered Ocean City Thursday afternoon and made memorial stops throughout the island, including at the island’s Veterans Memorial Park and the VFW and American Legion posts.

The city also hosted runners for a 6:30 p.m. dinner Thursday at the Community Center on 1735 Simpson Ave. After spending the night in a Somers Point hotel, runners continued northward Friday morning.

The run started 8 a.m. Thursday at the Cape May Lighthouse. The 188-mile trek is set to end in northern New Jersey Sunday afternoon at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel Township.

A committee of American Legion members, headed by Jack Hagan, coordinated Ocean City’s during the event.
