OCEAN CITY — Members of Ocean City’s American Legion Post 524 will supervise 11 memorial stops on the island as the 2016 Run for the Fallen makes its way through town Thursday, Sept. 22.

The New Jersey Run for the Fallen is an organization of military personnel who run throughout the state in memory of service members killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. At the end of each mile will be a memorial marker, where runners pause to salute fallen service members and the sacrifices made by Gold Star families.

The run starts 8 a.m. Thursday at the Cape May Lighthouse and ends in northern New Jersey Sunday afternoon at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel Township.

Runners are set to enter Ocean City from the Rush Chattin bridge Thursday afternoon. The first memorial stop here is 3:26 p.m. at Corson’s Inlet State Park.

The run then heads north, stopping in various locations on the island after each mile, before reaching the city’s Veterans Park on Wesley Avenue between Fifth and Sixth streets. Runners will then head south again until finishing around 5:30 p.m. at the Ocean City American Legion Post 524’s headquarters, 3304 Bay Ave.

The city will host runners for a 6:30 p.m. dinner Thursday at the Community Center on 1735 Simpson Ave. Runners will start back up Friday morning to head north, beginning in Somers Point. They will continue northward until finishing the four-day, 188-mile-long trek Sunday afternoon.

A committee of American Legion members, headed by Jack Hagan, will coordinate Ocean City’s efforts during the event.
