Americans are worried, upset, and scared about the assault by an adversary on our democracy during the 2016 election. The majority will not trust the conclusions of Republican-dominated intelligence committees that serve themselves.

The Trump administration recruited the chairs of these committees to tamp down Russian-related media stories. These committees (which have clearly drawn their own conclusions) are supposed to be leading the investigation.

Congressman Frank LoBiondo, a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee, needs to publicly support an independent prosecutor and a bipartisan select committee to review Russian influence in our election and our current administration. This is a national emergency and military lives could be at risk if Trump puts boots on the ground to serve Russian interests.

The process should be expedited and the standing committees should continue their work while the select committee is being formed. Anything less and this story will overwhelm this administration for the next four years.

The Russian story is not going away. Each time the Trump administration leans on institutions working to discover the truth, media add more investigative reporters to this story.

The smoking gun will be found. The question is, by whom? And which side of history will Congressman LoBiondo be on then?
