A local liquor retailer has been awarded one of the top prizes in the industry.

White Horse Wine & Spirits in Absecon was given the 2017 Market Watch Magazine Leader award.

Only six stores across the country were awarded for their excellence in the beverage alcohol retailing industry.

Adam Sternberger, who co-owns White Horse with his father, Steve, and his wife, Elizabeth McCabe, said the award shows how much their hard work had paid off since opening nine years ago.

“That’s your main publication in the industry, and being awarded something like that was an honor,” said Sternberger, of Ocean City. “South Jersey can often get neglected for some things, but it was nice to be recognized.”

Sternberger credits the business for expanding to high-quality takeout food as well as the traditional wine and spirits any other liquor store offers.

“We look to offer an experience rather than walking in to get your product,” he said. “The food and market mentality we have is really what has put us on the map.”

The store has an updated website and offers dinner takeout Wednesday through Friday.
