Gathering Wool 10 a.m.-noon Tuesdays, through May 28 at the Ventnor branch of the Atlantic County Library, 6500 Atlantic Ave. The meetings are open to adults and all levels of experience are welcome to chat, snack and meet neighbors while knitting or stitching. Participants may bring any project they are working on or come to be inspired. Call (609) 823-4614.

English Conversation Group 6 p.m. Tuesdays, through May 28 at the Pleasantville branch of the Atlantic County Library, 33 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. The group is open to adults and registration is requested. Participants learn new vocabulary and improve their pronunciation while having fun and making friends in a relaxed setting. Call (609) 641-1778.

Cape May Stage opens 25th season May 17

 CAPE MAY – Cape May Stage will present the world premiere of New Jersey playwright Shawn Fisher’s “How to Make a Rope Swing” at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17 at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Bank and Lafayette streets.

The play will mark the theater’s 25th anniversary season.

Fashion show May 22

The Avalon Garden Club will be present its annual fashion show and luncheon "Fashions by the Sea" on Wednesday, May 22 at the Windrift Hotel.  Doors open at 11:30 a.m. with the fashion show at 1:30 p.m.  Fashions on display are by Bellanova from Stone Harbor.  Tickets are $30. Peter Nero back in Cape May for Memorial Day

 Peter Nero and the Philadelphia Pops will return for a second concert at Cape May Convention Hall 8 p.m. Saturday, May 25, in Cape May.

“There’s no place like the South Jersey Shore for Memorial Day weekend and no orchestra like ours to celebrate this patriotic holiday at Cape May Convention Hall,” said Peter Nero. “We are honored the city of Cape May asked us to be a part of this special second annual celebration.”

An Evening with the Fred Hall Orchestra

CAPE MAY – Cape May will present An Evening with the Fred Hall Orchestra on Friday, May 17 at Cape May Convention Hall, featuring show tunes, disco, big band music, oldies and rock.

“Since 1971, the name Fred Hall has been synonymous with the most lively, sophisticated and professional dance orchestras in the entire Delaware Valley,” reads a statement from organizers. “Fred Hall Orchestra has performed at hundreds of prestigious affairs throughout the region.”

Art auction to aid food bank

 CAPE MAY — GABLES of Cape May County is holding its annual auction 7 p.m. Friday May 17 at the Inn of Cape May 7 Ocean St. in Cape May.

New this year is the focus on original art work, with pieces in several media including, oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels. Artist's works include mixed media, stained glass, mosaics, photography, and jewelry.

Bird walks offered at Nature Center

The Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge will again offer free bird and nature walks every Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at the Two Mile Beach Unit of the Cape May National Wildlife Refuge at 12001 Pacific Ave. in Wildwood Crest.

“The public is invited to come and learn about this amazing natural area, consisting of a rare maritime dune forest nestled between the untouched beach dunes and the salt marsh,” reads a statement from organizers.  “Migrant and nesting song and shore birds, as well as butterflies and dragonflies, are plentiful year round.  Native plants and trees that once covered the New Jersey barrier islands can also be found here.”

Mrs. New Jersey America Pageant looking for entrants

ATLANTIC CITY – The Mrs. New Jersey America Organization is accepting applications for the 2013 Mrs. New Jersey Competition set for June 22-23 at Resorts Casino Hotel.

Competition includes interview, evening gown and swimsuit. There is no talent category. You must be at least 18 years of age, married, a U.S. citizen and a resident of New Jersey for at least three months (exceptions for military). No pageant experience is necessary.

Memorial service and brunch to honor first responders killed in the line of duty

ATLANTIC CITY – The 200 Club will present the 28th annual Cape-Atlantic Memorial Service and Brunch honoring police, fire and rescue personnel who died in the line of duty Sunday, June 9 at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church and at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City.

The keynote speaker is Bob Delaney, a New Jersey state trooper, NBA referee and motivational speaker. He is the author of “Covert: My Years Infiltrating the Mob,” and “Surviving the Shadows: A Journey of Hope into Post Traumatic Stress.”
