One woman play in Cape May Monday

CAPE MAY -- Cape May Stage presents the Chase Arts’ production of “Eve's Lament,” written and performed by Denise Kumani Gantt 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Cape May Stage’s Robert Shackleton Playhouse on Lafayette and Bank Streets. Tickets are $20 general admission; $15 for seniors (62 and older) and students with ID. Call 770-7820 or see www.chasearts.org

Waking up in a mental institution, after attempting suicide, a middle-aged Eve shares her poetic delusions of growing up in a world where women rule. This world premier is a one-woman show with music featuring jazz bassist Michael Logan.

Denise Kumani Gantt’s plays and performance pieces include “meditations/from the ash,” winner of the Artscape 1997 Best Play Contest and voted Best New Play by the Baltimore Alternative and “Three Stories to the Ground,” written with Gabriel Shanks and winner of the Theatre Project Outstanding Vision In Theatre Award.

An excerpt of the play was read as part of the Classical Theatre of Harlem’s Playwrights Playground in July. In 2003, her collection of poetry, conjuring the dead, was awarded the Maryland Emerging Writers Award by poet, Afaa Michael Weaver. Gantt holds a master of fine arts degree in theater performance from Towson University.
