Nucky Johnson lawyer to discuss book March 9

Former Nucky Johnson lawyer Frank J. Ferry will discuss his book, “Nucky: The Real Story of the Atlantic City Boardwalk Boss,” 11 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at the Atlantic City Free Public Library, in second-floor meeting room, 1 N. Tennessee Ave.

Johnson was an Atlantic City political boss and racketeer who unofficially ran the Republican political machine that controlled Atlantic City and Atlantic County from the 1910s-’30s. Nucky Thompson, the lead character on HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” is a fictionalized version of Johnson.

Ferry met Johnson in 1964 and represented him in the U.S. Department of Justice’s case against him. Ferry successfully halted the government's action to collect on a $20,000 fine stemming from Johnson’s previous conviction for tax evasion in 1941. They remained friends until Johnson’s death in 1968.

The program is free and open to people of all ages. Registration is not required.
