The mosquito, considered the most dangerous insect on earth by entomologists, lives in abundance in Cape May County. Of the 63 mosquito species found in New Jersey, 45 call Cape May County home, making it one of the most mosquito-dense counties in the state.

“The mosquito is the deadliest animal on the planet,” said Peter Bosak, superintendent of the Cape May County Department of Mosquito Control. “It is the most important insect in the world as far as disease transmission.”

“We believe there’s somewhat of a connection,” said Middle Township Police Chief Chris Leusner.

But he said motel owners have been cooperative with police, and they have also been told to keep a lookout for criminal activity.

AVALON – The focal point of the proposed Sept. 11 Memorial Plaza will be a 1,800 pound steel I-beam artifact recovered from the site of Ground Zero at the World Trade Center in New York City.

Residents, non-residents, visitors and vacationers are being told to evacuate the Borough of Avalon by Friday evening, according to the Avalon Office of Emergency Management. Access to Avalon will likely be cut off on Saturday because of Hurricane Irene, officials say.

Vacationers, non-residents, and visitors began fleeing Thursday afternoon. Cape May County will be under an evacuation as of 8 a.m. Friday.

Special events have been cancelled through the weekend, and access to Avalon’s beaches will be prohibited starting on Friday, and lasting until at least Sunday.

“Hurricane Irene is a powerful, dangerous storm that is forecast to move over Avalon”, said Avalon Mayor Martin Pagliughi, who also serves as the Borough’s emergency management coordinator. “This evacuation order applies to everyone. We expect all visitors, vacationers, and residents to heed our warning. We fully expect to experience a storm event that Avalon has never seen before”.

On Thursday, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie advised everyone who lives on barrier islands in New Jersey to leave their communities within 24 hours. Avalon is advising visitors to immediately pack up their belongings and leave the Borough immediately. Residents will be ordered on Friday to leave the Borough as well.

Hurricane Irene is expected to move right along the New Jersey coastline. According to the National Hurricane Center, the National Weather Service, and emergency management officials there is the potential for more than a foot of rain, severe coastal flooding, a significant storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and widespread power outages, loss of communications and other infrastructure issues.

The Borough asks that people make arrangements immediately to stay with a family member or a friend who lives outside of Cape May County, away from the New Jersey coastline. Avalon residents who have no place to go have a shelter available at the Cumberland County College off Route 55 in Millville.

Avalon emergency management officials expect the shelter to be available starting Friday, Aug. 26, at 1 p.m. Any special needs residents in the community who have no means of evacuation, contact the Avalon Police Department dispatch at 967-3411. Avalon is providing transportation to the borough's shelter on Friday.

Residents are also being asked to immediately secure their properties. Patio furniture, trash cans, curbside trash, umbrellas and other items should be brought inside the home or garage as they may be subjected to strong gusty winds. Officials also suggest bringing along an emergency kit that includes a flashlight, a battery-operated radio, water, and any medications that one may need for a few days. Those who bring pets should pack pet food and medicine, blankets, cages, identification and leashes. Homeowners and business owners are advised to safeguard their properties by shutting off the main electrical power supply.

Avalon will continue to update the community on its emergency radio station, 1630AM; on ShoreTV Channel 2 for Comcast customers; on the Borough’s website, www.avalonboro.org; and on the Borough’s official Facebook page. Avalon will also use its Global Connect reverse 911 system to notify the public about the voluntary evacuation.
