Three seek fresh terms after long service

AVALON – Mayor Martin Pagliughi, Council President Dick Dean and Avalon Councilman Chuck Covington are set to run for reelection together as “Team Avalon” in the May 10 municipal election.

That means everyone on the ballot will be on the same team.

According to Avalon spokesman Scott Wahl, no one else turned in petitions to appear on the ballot.

If re-elected, as seems quite likely, this July Pagliughi will start his 20th year as Avalon’s mayor, which he ran for after a four-year term on council. In fact, all three men have a long record in Avalon. Dean ran with Pagliughi for council back in 1987, and Covington won a council seat when the Pagliughi was first elected mayor in 1991, according to Avalon Clerk Amy Kleuskens.

That does not mean the three won’t campaign this year. “Team Avalon” has a three-hour beef and beer fundraiser set for the Circle Tavern at 21st and Dune Drive starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28. The cost will be $25.

“We look forward to seeing our friends and neighbors in Avalon”, said Avalon Council President Dick Dean. “This will be a tremendous opportunity to thank everyone for their support, ideas, and dialogue.”

“Our team truly appreciates the opportunity to provide good government in Avalon”, said Covington, in written statement about the upcoming event. “It is a privilege working with Marty, Dick, and the rest of Avalon’s Borough Council to provide a high level of services to our residents and visitors. We invite everyone to our beef and beer event for conversation about how we can do better over the next four years in a fun, informal setting.”
