Two-act show to benefit musical program
MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – Since fall, Chelsey Smith, 20, has been practicing a song she sang during her senior year in high school.
She’s preparing for a performance Saturday, Feb. 25, at the Middle Township Performing Arts Center. Smith is a 2009 graduate of Middle Township High School.
Some 80 former MTHS students from the past 20 years will take to the stage as part of a two-act show that begins at 7 p.m.
Performing “The Miller’s Son” from A Little Night Music will be “a challenge, but a fun challenge,” says Smith, who is a college student from Dennis Township. The musical is about tangled love affairs.
Smith said she sang the song as a high-school senior.
“There is so much to look forward to [during the reunion show],” Smith said.
She said she is also excited to see her former cast members. Smith said they “had the best time together” in high school.
Smith had been involved in musicals during her four years of high school.
“It was always a very busy time,” she recalls of performing high school musicals on stage.
Smith also remembers performing the musical “Godspell” during her freshman year at Middle Township High School.
“It [performing in high school] just impacted me so much,” she said.
So much so that she is majoring in musical theater at Shenandoah University in Virginia. She is a junior college student.
Smith has aspirations of performing on a cruise line or national tour. She wants to explore the world doing what she loves, she said.
“As long as continually work [in performing], I will be happy,” she said.
Many of the performers won't practice together until the day of the show, said Debby Jenkins Dalfonso, who directs the musicals at Middle Township High School.
But she is not concerned about that.
"I think it will be a fun evening," Dalfonso said. "It will not be a perfect evening."
Former cast members and students will kickoff the show with “Lullaby of Broadway” from 42nd Street and round out the performance with “One Day More” from Les Miserables.
The musical reunion show is a fundraiser for next year’s musical program. The fundraising goal is $7,000, says Dalfonso.
She said she wants about $16,000 in the musical program’s coffers. At the beginning of this school year, there had only about $10,000.
Dalfonso said the musical program is supported by fundraisers. Money goes toward materials for set construction, for example.
"It's obviously sustained itself well," she said of the musical program.
Smith praised Dalfonso.
“She [Dalfonso] really knows how to bring out the best in her students,” Smith said.
Dalfonso “pushes us, that’s for sure,” Smith said.
Dalfonso has been involved in musicals at the school district for 16 years.
"I do think it is going to be a packed house," Dalfonso said.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors and $10 for students.
Dalfonso suggests buying tickets in advance by calling the box office at 463-1924.
The Middle Township Performing Arts Center is at 212 Bayberry Drive in Cape May Court House.
