Dennis Township School District has been awarded $50,000 for being among districts that showed strong academic performance with students with disabilities.

The state Department of Education announced Friday, Feb. 17, that $1 million has been awarded to 12 districts that showed high growth and proficiency within its special education student population in the 2010-11 school year.

Officials with the Dennis Township School District could not be reached for comment as of Feb. 17. The district is closed Feb. 17 and Feb. 20 in observance of Presidents’ Weekend and Presidents’ Day.

The money can be used to provide special education programs and services, implement enhanced services, and expand programs, according to a press release from the state Department of Education.

The DOE selected kindgergarten-12 school district award recipients by identifying proficiency among students with disabilities in math and language arts literacy on the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge and the Alternate Proficiency Assessment.
"While certainly these districts are not the only ones to show results for students with disabilities, we hope that this announcement today spurs a dialogue so that we identify and learn from successful programs across the state," said Chris Cerf, acting commissioner of the state Department of Education.
