School approves transportation agreement with other districts

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – The Board of Education will receive more than $62,500 for transporting students to and from area schools.

On Thursday, the school board approved transportation agreements for elementary schools in Avalon and Stone Harbor, Ocean Academy in Ocean County, Middle Township/Cape May Technical High School, Cape May County Special Services School District, Wildwood Catholic High School and Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School in Dennis Township.

This mostly accounts for this school year but one agreement is from last summer.

The transportation agreements have been in place for several years, said Superintendent Michael Kopakowski.

The most the Board of Education will receive is $14,399 to transport 25 Stone Harbor students to Avalon Elementary School, and the least is $850 to take an Avalon student to Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School in Dennis Township.

In other matters, the Board of Education:

•  approved Amy Reed as a replacement part-time teacher’s aide at the middle school; Erica Waldron-Hawk as a replacement part-time teacher’s aide at elementary school No. 2; Michael Longstreth  as a replacement part-time teacher’s aide at elementary school No. 2; and Devin Quinn-Gibson as a new part-time teacher’s aide at elementary school No. 1.

Each will receive a $13,180 salary and will start when a criminal history background check is completed.

• approved as a senior custodial worker at elementary school No. 1, effective Nov. 19. He will receive a $32,639 pro-rated salary.

• named Jennifer Sheeran as a long-term computer teacher substitute at the middle school.

• approved paying Justyna Lychacz as a tutor at the Martin Luther King Community Center in Whitesboro for one and a half hours at $30 an hour. Gina Angelozzi, Dawn Brewer, Melanie Collins, Rob Shamberg, Vicki Villano and Camala Walter have been approved as tutors at the Middle Township High School Homework Club. They will be paid $30 an hour.

• approved tutors for the Middle Township Middle School acceleration program at $30 an hour. They are Connie Chabok, Ralph Nessler, Kristen Stiles, Sharon Rementer, Jaqueline Mendel and Sue Pohle.

• named Richard Sterling as middle school band director, being paid $4,179.

• approved Ryan Babnew as a high school basketball volunteer.

• accepted the resignations of Geraldine Schlenger as an elementary school No. 2 teacher’s aide; Dena Sutor as a middle school’s teacher’s aide; Emily Little as a middle school teacher’s aide.

• approved the resignation of Louis Vito as a middle school teacher’s aide, effective Dec. 21; and David Del Conte as instructional supervisor at both elementary schools, to be determined.

• approved Kystalynne Maloney, Robin Keil, Kelly Bainbridge, Kathyrn Sellers, Deanna Lowe and Steven Gurdgiel as substitute teachers.

• approved Susan Bright as a substitute nurse, Gayle Levinthal as a substitute bus driver and Geraldine Schlenger as a substitute bus aide.

• approved Lisa Mericle and Susan Roselli to write middle school curriculum for 15 hours at $30 an hour.

• approved a 10-month agreement with Dr. Buzz Mingin for consulting services for the 2012-13 school year at $10,000. He is being paid through an Individuals with Disabilities Education Act grant.

• approved the application and approval of $21,043 in Perkins Grant money for July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013.

The next school board meeting is scheduled Thursday, Dec. 20. The session begins at 7:30 p.m. at the administration building at 216 South Main St. in Cape May Court House and is open to the public.
