Officials to investigate death at county jail

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Officials are investigating the death of an inmate at the Cape May County Jail over the weekend.

On Dec. 9, other inmates notified correctional officers that John McElroy, 45, was in medical distress and unresponsive while in the jail’s common area, known as the day room, according to a press release from the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Correctional officers responded and began lifesaving efforts, including performing CPR and using the automated external defibrillator before McElroy was taken to the Cape Regional Medical Center in Cape May Court House. 

Hospital personnel pronounced McElroy dead at the medical center, according to a press release from county officials.

The investigation is ongoing and is being investigated by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Cape May County Sheriff’s Office, Internal Affairs Unit.
