MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – A 40-year-old Burleigh man has been arrested on a charge of impersonating a police officer.

Middle Township Police say James Kelly was panhandling in the Rio Grande area, while pretending to be a police officer.

He was charged with impersonating a public servant, a fourth-degree crime, and was placed in Cape May County Jail on $1,500 bail.

Middle Township Police say a public official will not solicit money from the public on the streets, and that if a person is approached by anyone soliciting money or information, they should ask for identification.

“If you are suspicious, call 911 immediately to confirm the identity of the person,” reads a statement from police.
