Police: Man walked away from fatal crash

MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – A Cape May Court House man faces manslaughter and other charges after police say he crashed his car and left his passenger dead at the scene in Burleigh Friday.

Police identified the deceased as Jibreel Masud, 27, of Cape May Court House. Officials closed down Shunpike Road down for four hours. 

Police say that the driver, Bruce Moffitt Jr., 23, was traveling north on Shunpike Road, in the Oyster Road, when the vehicle lost control and left the road crashing into trees.

Police officers found a red Jeep Grand Cherokee with extensive damage in the wooded shoulder of the road. Moffitt had left the scene, according to police, and was found a short time later.

Moffitt was transported to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The passenger, Jibreel Masud, was pronounced at the scene by AtlantiCare medics. 

Police responded to the fatal crash at 8:24 p.m.

The driver, Moffitt, was charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a crash resulting in a death, a second-degree crime, and aggravated manslaughter, a first-degree crime.

Moffitt was placed in Cape May County jail on $250,000 bail. 

Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office and Middle Township Major Crime Unit are investigating the case.

The Court House Fire, Goshen Fire, and Rio Grande fire companies responded to the scene and assisted with lighting and closing Shunpike Road down for four hours.
